Research Proposal Summary

Runoff, soil water status, land management responses to a range of erosion and crop production are being monitored at sites on the eastern Darling Downs and in the Maranoa.  These sites have been monitored since 1976 and 1982 respectively and are some of the few locations where long term monitoring of water balance and erosion has been maintained. Pasture catchments have been incorporated into the cropping cycle in both regions a pasture site is being maintained in the Lockyer Valley.   Management System analysis - A range of models are being developed to analysis components of farming systems.  Models range from simple rules of thumb (based on experience and impartial evidence) through to dynamic biophysical cropping systems models such as PERFECT and APSIM. Models which focus on the movement of agricultural chemicals are also being evaluated and applied.

Aims

§    To monitor water balance and erosion aspects of alternative land management strategies.

§    To improve our understanding of hydrologic and erosion processes so that these processes may be estimated for other locations and cropping systems

Potential Outcomes

§    Base data and catchment responses to management

§    Models developed and tested as tools to analyse land management

§    Provision of information and learning systems
