A farming systems trial
has been established on David and Liz Hills property Dunkerry
South at Nindigully, near St George, since 1996.
The aims of the trial
are to assess the effect of contrasting crop/crop and pasture/crop
strategies on sustainable and profitable farming systems in the
less than 600 millimetre, sub-tropical rainfall zone, and to involve
growers and agribusiness in target setting, decision making and
management of the trial.
|
 |
The
systems being studied are:
• continuous winter cereal (wheat, barley)
• grain legume - winter cereal rotation (chickpea - wheat)
• opportunity cropping rotations with wheat, barley, chickpea,
faba
bean, canola, grain sorghum, millet, mungbean and lab lab
• short-term legume leys of medic and lucerne in rotation with
wheat
• mixed pasture leys of Bambatsi Panic plus legume (medic and
lucerne
) in rotation with wheat.

Grain yield and grain protein data for crop and
pasture-crop systems 'Dunkerry South' 1996-2001.
Spreadsheet images of yields and protein data
Key to
spreadsheet codes
Y = Yield, P = Protein, N = Nitrogen Rate CT = conventional
tillage; ZT = zero tillage
N0 = no nitrogen fertiliser applied. Nt = target nitrogen
fertiliser applied, eg 60N = 60 kg N/ha
applied as urea at sowing.

Lucerne is difficult to remove using zero till methods. Further
assessment of chemicals and chemical combinations was warranted.

The trial was not sown to winter crop in 2000 due to the dry seasonal
conditions, but winter crops were sown again this year, on 17 May
and 21 June 2001. The trial is continuing

Does zero tillage result in the benefits of soil water storage
and grain yield that have been found in other regions?

Winter crops were sown in early July on
marginal soil water reserves, but failed to produce harvestable
yields. Grain sorghum and mungbean were sown in
December 2003.
