WFS - The "Mulga View" Trial           


A farming systems trial is currently in progress on Ian and Kay Hill’s property 'Mulga View' 30km west of St. George.
 

The systems currently being studied are:

   •   continuous wheat - zero and reduced tillage, with
       different rates of applied nitrogen and phosphorus.

   •   grain legume-winter cereal rotations (chickpea-
        wheat).

   •   short term legume leys of medic, lucerne and
       Caatinga stylo in rotation with wheat

   •   mixed pasture leys of Buffel grass and legume
        (medic, lucerne, stylo), in rotation with wheat.

   •   opportunity cropping rotations with wheat, barley,
       chickpea, faba bean, canola, grain sorghum and guar

A central trial on red soil, in conjunction with on-farm trials seeks to develop general principles for sustainable farming systems near St. George. The trial is located at the property Mulga View.

In 2001, crop establishment, growth and yield of winter crops were adversely affected by duck and galah damage and variable sowing depth.

In the 2003 winter trial, phosphorus fertiliser application (6 kg P/ha) in wheat resulted in an increase in grain yield.
