APSRU Seminar Series 21/04/05

Presenter:
Sarah Park, Tropical Landscapes - Production Systems, CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, Toowoomba

Topic:
"Potential impact of climate change on the Queensland sugar industry and the capacity for adaptation"

Abstract:
This presentation provides a qualitative assessment of the direct and indirect effects of a change in individual climate variables on the sugar industry in Queensland. A generally warmer and drier climate will bring both negative and positive impacts to crop yield. The greatest impacts are likely to occur at the level of primary production, however as changes in sugar yield cascade through the production chain, the impacts of climate change will undoubtedly be felt by all sectors. If the sugar industry is to reduce the negative impacts of a change in climate, and capitalise on the positive effects, a whole-of-industry impact/adaptation action plan must be developed and implemented in the near future. Options for a possible way forward are discussed.
